In the aftermath of the EU referendum campaign hate crimes in the UK soared, rising by up to 100 per cent in some places. There is little doubt the toxic political debate around immigration that developed during the campaign and beforehand contributed to this spike.
We must ensure xenophobia and hate crimes do not become the new normal in British society. The legitimisation of hateful views risks fuelling a dangerous atmosphere for immigrants and minorities.
We must find a way to address the very real questions we face around immigration in the context of Brexit without normalising xenophobic discourse. This part of our work will therefore focus on practical measures that can be taken to detoxify political discourse around immigration.
